Varutoiteallikas, often abbreviated as UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), is a device that provides emergency power to a load when the input power source fails. It typically consists of a battery, an inverter, and a charging circuit. When the main power is available, the UPS charges its battery and passes the mains power through to the connected equipment. If the mains power is interrupted, the inverter instantly converts the stored DC power from the battery into AC power, seamlessly supplying it to the load without any noticeable interruption.

The primary purpose of a UPS is to protect sensitive electronic equipment from power outages, voltage sags, surges, and other power disturbances. This protection is crucial for computers, servers, medical devices, and other critical systems where data loss or equipment damage could have significant consequences. UPS systems vary in capacity and features, ranging from small units designed for individual workstations to large, industrial-scale systems capable of supporting entire data centers.

Different types of UPS technologies exist, including standby, line-interactive, and online. Standby UPS units are the most basic, switching to battery power only when an outage is detected. Line-interactive UPS systems offer more advanced voltage regulation. Online UPS units provide the highest level of protection by continuously supplying power from the inverter, even when the mains power is stable, thus isolating the connected equipment from all power fluctuations. The selection of a UPS depends on the specific power requirements and the criticality of the equipment being protected.
