Vaihtojännitteisiä refers to alternating current (AC) voltage in Finnish. AC voltage is an electrical voltage that periodically reverses its direction. Unlike direct current (DC) voltage, which flows in one constant direction, AC voltage oscillates between positive and negative values. The rate at which this oscillation occurs is called the frequency, measured in Hertz (Hz). Common household electricity is supplied as AC voltage. This alternating nature allows for efficient transmission of electricity over long distances using transformers, which can easily step voltage up or down. Many electrical devices, such as motors and appliances, are designed to operate with AC voltage. The generation of AC voltage typically occurs in power plants using alternators. The sinusoidal waveform is the most common representation of AC voltage.
