VTitrant

Vtitrant is a term used in analytical chemistry to denote the volume of titrant added to a sample during a titration. It is a primary variable in calculating the amount of analyte present, since, with known titrant concentration and a balanced chemical equation, the quantity of substance in the sample can be derived from the titrant volume.

Definition and usage: Vtitrant refers to the cumulative or incremental volume of titrant delivered by the titration apparatus at a given moment. In manual titrations, Vtitrant is read from the burette scale; in automated titrations, Vtitrant is tracked digitally and can be plotted as a titration curve. The value at the endpoint, often called the equivalence point, corresponds to the complete reaction between titrant and analyte.

Calculation: If Ct is the titrant concentration and Vt is the titrant volume at the endpoint, then the amount of titrant used is nt = Ct × Vt. The amount of analyte is derived from nt divided by the stoichiometric coefficient of the reaction. Accuracy depends on proper calibration of Ct, correct determination of the endpoint, and consideration of any side reactions or dilution effects.

Methods and equipment: Vtitrant is used in acid–base, redox, complexometric, and precipitation titrations. Equipment includes a burette or syringe pump, a solution of known concentration (the titrant), and a detector such as a pH or redox electrode, or an indicator for endpoint determination.
