VEI8

VEI8 refers to a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) rating of 8. The VEI is a logarithmic scale used to measure the size of volcanic eruptions. Each whole number step on the scale represents an approximate tenfold increase in the volume of ejected material. VEI8 is the highest rating on the scale and signifies a colossal eruption. These eruptions are characterized by the ejection of over 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cubic miles) of material, such as ash, pumice, and volcanic rock. Eruptions of this magnitude are extremely rare, occurring on average once every tens of thousands of years.

A VEI8 eruption is also known as a supervolcano eruption or a mega-colossal eruption. The effects of such an event are global and long-lasting. The immense volume of ash and gases injected into the stratosphere can block sunlight, leading to significant global cooling, often referred to as a volcanic winter. This can disrupt weather patterns, impact agriculture worldwide, and potentially cause widespread famine. The eruption column can reach heights of over 50 kilometers (31 miles). Examples of past VEI8 eruptions include the Toba eruption in Indonesia approximately 74,000 years ago and the Yellowstone caldera eruption around 640,000 years ago. Due to their rarity and catastrophic potential, VEI8 eruptions are a significant area of study in volcanology and disaster preparedness.
