VEI8
VEI8 refers to a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) rating of 8. The VEI is a logarithmic scale used to measure the size of volcanic eruptions. Each whole number step on the scale represents an approximate tenfold increase in the volume of ejected material. VEI8 is the highest rating on the scale and signifies a colossal eruption. These eruptions are characterized by the ejection of over 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cubic miles) of material, such as ash, pumice, and volcanic rock. Eruptions of this magnitude are extremely rare, occurring on average once every tens of thousands of years.
