Utsöndringsvägarna, known in English as excretory pathways, are the biological routes through which organisms eliminate waste products from their bodies. These pathways are essential for maintaining homeostasis, the stable internal environment necessary for survival. Different organisms have evolved diverse excretory systems tailored to their specific needs and environments.

In mammals, the primary excretory pathway involves the kidneys, which filter blood to remove metabolic wastes, excess salts, and water. These filtered substances form urine, which travels through the ureters to the bladder for storage and is then expelled from the body via the urethra. The lungs also function as excretory organs, releasing carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration, into the atmosphere during exhalation. The skin contributes to excretion through sweat glands, which eliminate small amounts of urea, salts, and water.

Other organisms have distinct excretory mechanisms. Aquatic invertebrates like flatworms utilize flame cells and protonephridia to excrete waste directly into their aquatic surroundings. Insects employ Malpighian tubules, which empty into the digestive tract, to filter waste from their hemolymph. Fish excrete nitrogenous wastes, primarily ammonia, through their gills and kidneys. The specific composition and methods of waste removal vary widely, reflecting the evolutionary adaptations to different ecological niches and physiological demands.
