UstuuKhuree
Ustuu Khuree is a significant Buddhist monastery located in the Zavkhan Province of Mongolia. Its name, meaning "three-tiered monastery," refers to its unique architectural style. The monastery was originally founded in the 17th century and became a prominent religious and cultural center in the region. At its peak, Ustuu Khuree was home to hundreds of monks and housed a vast collection of religious artifacts and scriptures. Like many monasteries in Mongolia, it suffered destruction during the Stalinist purges of the 1930s. However, following the democratic revolution in Mongolia in the early 1990s, efforts began to restore and rebuild Ustuu Khuree. Today, it is a functioning monastery and a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in Tibetan Buddhism, Mongolian history, and the region's stunning natural landscapes. The annual Ustuu Khuree Music Festival, held on the monastery grounds, has become a notable event celebrating traditional and contemporary Mongolian music.
