Unterabstraktion

Unterabstraktion is a term used in mathematics and logic to describe a specific type of subtraction where the subtrahend is considered less than the minuend, or where the concept of negative numbers is not yet introduced or is intentionally avoided. In essence, it focuses on the subtraction of a smaller quantity from a larger quantity, resulting in a positive difference. This concept is often encountered in early childhood education when introducing arithmetic.

The term itself suggests a less complex form of subtraction, hence "Unter" (under or below) and "Abstraktion" (abstraction). It implies a more concrete or foundational understanding of the operation. While standard subtraction in mathematics allows for negative results when the subtrahend exceeds the minuend, Unterabstraktion strictly adheres to scenarios where the outcome is non-negative. This pedagogical approach aims to build a solid understanding of basic arithmetic principles before progressing to more abstract mathematical concepts. It emphasizes the physical act of removing objects or quantities, where one cannot remove more than is present.
