Udløbsrøret

Udløbsrøret is a historical concept within the Danish water supply system. It refers to a brick-lined canal built in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly in Copenhagen, to collect and dispose of wastewater from private homes and public buildings. The canals, also known as "udløbsrøret" or "kloaker" in Danish, played a crucial role in the management of wastewater in pre-industrial cities.

The udløbsrøret system featured canals ranging from 1 to 2 meters in width and 1 to 2 meters in depth. Water flowed through the canals from homes, breweries, and other establishments, eventually emptying into the city's harbor or nearby waterways. Urban wastewater contamination presented significant public health concerns, contributing to the spread of diseases.

By the late 19th century, the traditional brick-lined canals began to show signs of inefficiency and sparked increased responsibilities for wastewater treatment. This led to the construction of new sewer systems in Copenhagen and other Danish cities. Many udløbsrøret canals were torn down or repurposed as a result.

Remnants of the udløbsrøret are still visible in several Copenhagen districts. Excavated archaeological finds have provided valuable historical insights into the use and development of Danish sanitary infrastructure during this period.
