UDPSegments

UDPSegments refers to the fundamental units of data transmitted over the User Datagram Protocol (UDP). UDP is a connectionless communication protocol that operates at the transport layer of the internet protocol suite. Unlike its counterpart, TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), UDP does not establish a persistent connection between sender and receiver. Instead, it sends data in discrete packets called datagrams.

Each datagram, or UDPSegment, contains a header followed by the payload. The UDP header is relatively small, typically 8 bytes. It includes essential fields such as the source port number, destination port number, length of the datagram (including the header), and a checksum for basic error detection. The payload is the actual data being transmitted.

When an application sends data using UDP, it is encapsulated into one or more UDPSegments. These segments are then passed down to the IP layer for routing across the network. At the receiving end, the IP layer delivers the datagrams to the UDP layer, which processes the header to identify the destination port and the application that should receive the data. The checksum is used to verify data integrity, though UDP does not guarantee delivery or order of arrival. This makes UDPSegments suitable for applications where speed and low overhead are prioritized over guaranteed reliability, such as streaming media, online gaming, and DNS.
