Täydennysvärikontrasti, known in English as complementary color contrast, is a fundamental concept in color theory. It refers to the visual effect created when two colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel are placed next to each other. These pairs, such as red and green, blue and orange, or yellow and violet, create the strongest possible contrast and can make each color appear more vibrant and intense.

When complementary colors are used together, they tend to enhance each other's brilliance. This phenomenon is due to how our eyes perceive color. The photoreceptor cells in our eyes, specifically the cones, are stimulated in specific ways by different wavelengths of light. When we see one color, our eyes naturally try to compensate by creating a perception of its complementary color. Placing the actual complementary color next to it amplifies this effect, leading to a dynamic visual experience.

The use of complementary color contrast is a common technique in various fields, including art, design, and photography.
