Työelektroidin

Työelektroidin is a Finnish term that translates to "work electrode" in English. It refers to the part of an electrochemical cell or device where the intended chemical reaction, either oxidation or reduction, takes place. In electrochemistry, an electrochemical cell typically consists of at least two electrodes: an anode and a cathode, immersed in an electrolyte.

The work electrode is the electrode where the primary electrochemical process of interest occurs. For instance, in an electrolysis setup, the work electrode would be where the substance is being decomposed. In a battery or fuel cell, it would be where the electrochemical reaction generates electricity. The material, surface area, and condition of the work electrode significantly influence the efficiency and kinetics of the electrochemical process. Researchers and engineers carefully select and design work electrodes based on the specific application, considering factors such as conductivity, catalytic activity, stability in the electrolyte, and resistance to fouling or corrosion.
