Tyhjiöympäristöjä refers to vacuum environments in Finnish. A vacuum is a space devoid of matter. In practice, a perfect vacuum is impossible to achieve, so vacuum environments are typically characterized by a very low pressure compared to atmospheric pressure. The degree of vacuum is measured by the pressure within the space.

Different types of vacuum environments exist, ranging from low vacuum (rough vacuum) to ultra-high vacuum. Low vacuum is characterized by pressures that still allow for some gas molecules to be present, but at significantly reduced levels. High vacuum environments have even fewer gas molecules, and ultra-high vacuum environments approach the theoretical absence of matter, with extremely low particle densities.

These environments are crucial in various scientific and industrial applications. They are used in semiconductor manufacturing to prevent contamination and enable precise deposition of materials. In scientific research, vacuum chambers are essential for experiments in particle physics, astrophysics, and surface science, where the absence of interfering molecules is critical. Space itself is a natural example of an extreme vacuum environment. The technologies and techniques used to create and maintain these low-pressure conditions are complex and require specialized equipment.
