Työturvallisuuslaissa

The Työturvallisuuslaki, or Occupational Safety and Health Act, is a foundational piece of Finnish legislation governing workplace safety and health. It aims to prevent accidents and occupational diseases, as well as to promote the well-being of employees in their work environment. The law outlines the responsibilities of employers, employees, and other relevant parties in ensuring a safe workplace.

Employers are legally obligated to identify and assess workplace hazards, implement necessary preventive measures, and provide employees with adequate training and supervision. This includes ensuring that work equipment is safe, that the work environment is healthy, and that necessary personal protective equipment is provided. Employers must also consult with employees or their representatives on matters related to occupational safety and health.

Employees, in turn, have a duty to follow safety instructions, use protective equipment correctly, and report any hazards or unsafe conditions they observe. They are also expected to cooperate with their employer to achieve a safe working environment. The law also addresses the role of occupational health care services in supporting the health and safety of employees.

The Työturvallisuuslaki is enforced by the Finnish Work Safety Inspectorate, which conducts inspections and can issue orders for compliance or impose penalties for violations. The act is periodically updated to reflect changes in working life, technological advancements, and international best practices in occupational safety and health. Its overarching goal is to create a culture of safety and well-being in all Finnish workplaces.
