TurkishHungarian refers to the historical and cultural connections between the Turkic peoples and Hungary. These connections are primarily rooted in the period of the Hungarian Conquest and the subsequent centuries.

The early Hungarians, also known as the Magyars, were a Finno-Ugric people who migrated westward from the Ural Mountains. During their migration, they came into contact with various Turkic groups, most notably the Oghuric or Onogur tribes, who inhabited the Pontic-Caspian steppe. This interaction led to significant Turkic influence on the Magyar language, particularly in vocabulary related to animal husbandry, agriculture, and social organization. Many Hungarian words have Turkic etymologies.

Beyond linguistic influence, there were also periods of direct rule and cultural exchange. The Seljuk Turks, a prominent Turkic dynasty, established a vast empire that at times bordered or influenced regions inhabited by Hungarians. Later, during the Ottoman period, much of Hungary was under Ottoman rule for over a century. This era saw a strong influx of Ottoman Turkish culture, including aspects of cuisine, architecture, music, and administrative practices. Many Hungarian words of Turkish origin entered the language during this time, distinct from the earlier Turkic influences.

Despite periods of conflict and conquest, these interactions have left a lasting, albeit complex, legacy on Hungarian culture and identity. The historical relationship between Turkic peoples and Hungary is a significant area of study in both Turkic and Hungarian history and linguistics.
