Trollhätte

Trollhättan, sometimes spelled Trollhätte in older sources, is a city in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden. It lies on the Göta älv river just downstream from Lake Vänern, about 60 kilometers north of Gothenburg. The city is the seat of Trollhättan Municipality and is part of the Västergötland region. The population is around 60,000 residents, with a larger municipal area that includes surrounding communities.

Geography and historic features play a central role in Trollhättan’s identity. The Trollhätte Falls on the Göta älv were historically a source of hydropower and helped drive industrial development in the area. The Trollhättan Canal, equipped with locks, connects the river to Lake Vänern and provides a navigable route that has shaped urban growth since the 19th century. The canal and falls remain prominent landmarks and attract visitors for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Economy and institutions have evolved from traditional industry toward a diversified modern economy. In the 20th century, the city became associated with the Saab automobile company, which produced cars in Trollhättan from the mid-20th century until the early 2010s. Today Trollhättan hosts technology, service industries, and education as key sectors. The city is home to University West (Högskolan Väst), with a campus in Trollhättan that emphasizes engineering, technology, and business disciplines.

Culture and transportation are well developed. The canal area provides parks, promenades, and cultural amenities, while the city is connected by road and rail, including regional rail services and access to the E45 highway. Trollhättan’s historical water-power heritage and its modern educational and technological presence characterize its role in western Sweden.
