Translokatorer, also known as translocators, are proteins that facilitate the movement of other molecules across biological membranes. Passive translocators, such as ion channels and porins, allow the movement of molecules down their concentration gradient, requiring no energy input. Active translocators, on the other hand, require energy to transport molecules against their concentration gradient. These include pumps and carriers. Pumps, such as the sodium-potassium pump, use ATP to move ions across the membrane, maintaining the electrochemical gradient necessary for various cellular functions. Carriers, like the glucose transporter, facilitate the movement of specific molecules in response to a concentration difference or other signals.

Translokatorer are essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis and ensuring proper functioning of biological systems. Dysfunction or mutations in these proteins can lead to various diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, where chloride channels are impaired, or diabetes, where insulin receptors are defective.
