Transfusiot

Transfusiot refer to the medical practice of transferring blood or blood components from a donor to a recipient. In many languages, the term is used to denote transfusions and related therapies, including not only whole blood but also various separated components. Transfusiot aim to restore blood volume, improve oxygen delivery, and correct coagulation deficiencies after injury, surgery, chronic disease, or other causes of significant blood loss or anemia.

Common components used in transfusiot include red blood cells, platelets, plasma, and cryoprecipitate. More specialized products such as granulocyte or stem cell transfusions may be used in particular clinical contexts. Before a transfusiot, compatibility testing is performed, typically involving ABO and Rh typing and a crossmatch or type-and-screen. Donor screening and testing minimize infectious risk, and techniques such as leukoreduction and irradiation are employed for selected patients to reduce complications.

Indications for transfusiot vary and include acute hemorrhage, substantial blood loss during surgery, severe anemia unresponsive to other treatments, and certain coagulation disorders. The procedure is usually performed by IV infusion under clinical monitoring. Dosing, rate, and the choice of component depend on the patient’s condition, infection risk, and underlying disease.

Risks associated with transfusiot include transfusion reactions (febrile, allergic, or hemolytic), transfusion-related acute lung injury, circulatory overload, alloimmunization, iron overload with repeated transfusions, and pathogen transmission. Safety measures, donor screening, and regulatory guidelines aim to mitigate these risks. Alternatives such as autologous transfusion or pharmacologic therapies to boost endogenous red cell production may be considered in some cases.
