Torktumling

Torktumling is the Swedish term for a tumble dryer, a household appliance used to dry clothing and textiles by tumbling them in a rotating drum while warmed air is circulated through the drum. The term can refer to the device itself or to the process of tumble drying.

Origin and development: Tumble dryers were introduced in the early 20th century and became common in households after World War II. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, energy-efficient variants such as heat pump dryers were developed, reducing energy usage compared with traditional vented models.

How it works: The drum rotates to mix fabrics and expose them evenly to heated air. Moisture is carried away by the airflow and is vented outside in vented models, condensed in condenser models, or managed by a heat-pump system that recirculates heat. Many modern units use moisture and temperature sensors to determine when the load is dry and then stop or shorten the cycle.

Types: Vented dryers require an external exhaust vent; condenser dryers condense the moisture into a reservoir or drain; heat pump dryers recirculate heat for higher energy efficiency. Most household models are front-loading, though top-loading designs exist in some markets. There are also compact and washer-dryer combo units.

Safety and maintenance: A lint filter should be cleaned after every cycle, and regular maintenance of ducts or vents helps prevent fire risk and improves efficiency. Adequate electrical connections, proper installation, and following manufacturer guidelines are important for safe operation.

Environmental and usage notes: Tumble drying consumes substantial energy, so choosing appropriate programs, load sizes, and lower heat settings can reduce consumption. In suitable conditions, air-drying or line-drying remains the most energy-efficient alternative.
