Toplica

Toplica is a geographic region in southern Serbia, defined by the valleys around the Toplica River. The Toplica River is a tributary of the Nišava, and the name is associated with the broader area as well as with administrative divisions that carry the same title.

The Toplica District (Toplički okrug) is an administrative unit of Serbia with its administrative center in Prokuplje. It comprises several municipalities, including Prokuplje, Blace, Žitorađa, and Kuršumlija. The district covers a portion of the southern Serbian landscape and serves as a local hub for economy, culture, and transportation.

Historically, the Toplica region has been inhabited since ancient and medieval times and played a role in various periods of conflict. In World War I, the Toplica Uprising of 1917 was a notable Serbian rebellion against Bulgarian occupation, reflecting local resistance during the wider war.

Geographically, the area features a mix of valleys, hills, and forested areas. The economy is largely based on agriculture and forestry, with towns like Prokuplje acting as regional centers for commerce, services, and culture.
