Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, commonly known as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest novelists of all time. Born in 1828 into an aristocratic family, Tolstoy experienced a privileged but tumultuous childhood. His early life was marked by military service, which significantly influenced his later literary works, particularly his depiction of war and its psychological toll.

Tolstoy's literary career began in the 1850s, and he gained international acclaim for his epic novels. His most famous works, "War and Peace" (1869) and "Anna Karenina" (1877), are celebrated for their profound psychological depth, intricate plots, and realistic portrayals of Russian society. These novels explore themes of love, family, faith, and the search for meaning in life.

Beyond his fiction, Tolstoy was also a prominent moral and religious thinker. In his later years, he developed a radical Christian philosophy that rejected state authority and church dogma. This philosophy, known as Tolstoyism, advocated for nonviolence, simple living, and a commitment to pacifism. His essays and philosophical writings, such as "The Kingdom of God Is Within You," had a significant impact on figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Tolstoy died in 1910, leaving behind a legacy as a literary giant and a profound social critic.
