Toimintakudos
Toimintakudos, translated as "functional tissue" or "active tissue" in English, is a term used in Finnish to describe a tissue within a building or structure that serves a primary purpose beyond mere support or enclosure. This concept is particularly relevant in architectural and engineering contexts, distinguishing parts of a building that are actively involved in its operation or intended use from those that are passive. Examples of toimintakudos can include elements like the electrical wiring, plumbing systems, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) infrastructure, and even the elevator systems within a building. These components are not just static parts of the structure; they are integral to the building's functionality and are designed to perform specific tasks.
The distinction between toimintakudos and structural or passive elements is important for planning, maintenance, and renovation.
