Toimintadiagrammi, or activity diagram in English, is a type of flowchart in the Unified Modeling Language (UML). It is used to model the dynamic aspects of a system, specifically the flow of control or data. Activity diagrams illustrate the workflow of a system, showing the sequence of activities, decisions, and parallel processes. They are particularly useful for describing business processes, workflows, and the logic of complex operations.

The fundamental elements of an activity diagram include actions, which represent individual steps or tasks. Transitions show the flow between actions. Decision nodes represent points where the flow can diverge based on conditions. Merge nodes bring diverging flows back together. Fork nodes split a flow into multiple concurrent paths, and join nodes synchronize these concurrent paths. Swimlanes, also known as partitions, can be used to group activities by the actor or component responsible for performing them, enhancing clarity when multiple participants are involved.

Activity diagrams are valuable for understanding the behavior of a system from a high-level perspective. They help identify potential bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement in a process. Developers use them for designing and documenting system logic, while business analysts employ them to model and communicate business processes. Their visual nature makes them an accessible tool for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
