Tipuväärtust

Tipuväärtust is a term used in Estonian to denote the peak value of a quantity. It describes the highest value that a time-varying quantity, signal, or dataset reaches within a given interval. The word is formed from tipu (peak, tip) and väärtus (value).

In mathematics and signal processing, tipuväärtus can refer to the maximum magnitude of a signal. Depending on context, it may mean the maximum positive value or the maximum absolute value. For a continuous function x(t), the tipuväärtus is often written as the maximum over the considered domain, and for a waveform it corresponds to the amplitude. In discrete data, tipuväärtus is the largest observed value, or the largest absolute value if magnitude is of interest.

Examples help illustrate the concept. If a sine wave has equation x(t) = A sin(ωt), its tipuväärtus (in magnitude) is A. For a data sequence [1, -3, 2, 7], the tipuväärtus, in terms of magnitude, is 7; if only positive values are considered, it would be 7 as well.

Tipuväärtust is distinct from related concepts such as peak-to-peak value (the distance between the positive and negative peaks), root-mean-square value (a measure of effective power), and supremum (a mathematical upper bound in a broader sense).
