Tietokantakehystä is a Finnish term that translates to "database caching" in English. It refers to the practice of storing frequently accessed database data in a faster, temporary storage location, such as RAM, to reduce the need for repeated disk access. This technique significantly improves the performance of applications that rely heavily on database interactions.

The primary goal of database caching is to speed up data retrieval. When a request for data is made, the system first checks the cache. If the data is found in the cache (a cache hit), it can be served much faster than fetching it directly from the database. If the data is not in the cache (a cache miss), it is retrieved from the database, and then typically added to the cache for future requests.

There are various strategies for implementing database caching. One common approach is to cache query results. This involves storing the output of specific SQL queries. Another method is to cache entire database tables or specific rows. Application-level caching, where the application itself manages the cached data, and database-level caching, managed by the database system itself, are also distinct approaches.

Effective database caching requires careful consideration of data volatility and cache invalidation. Data that changes frequently may not be a good candidate for caching, or the cache needs to be updated promptly when the underlying data changes to avoid serving stale information. Cache invalidation strategies ensure that the cache remains consistent with the actual database data.
