Tieteellisellä

tieteellisellä is the adessive singular form of the Finnish adjective tieteellinen, meaning “scientific.” In Finnish, adjectives agree with the noun they modify, and the adessive case expresses location on or at something, or means and manner. Therefore tieteellisellä is used when the noun it modifies is in the adessive form, or in common phrases that convey method or basis, such as “tieteellisellä otteella” (with a scientific approach) or “tieteellisellä tutkimuksella” (through scientific research).

Etymology: tieteellinen derives from tiede (science) with the suffix -ellinen, which forms adjectives meaning relating to or characteristic of. The term is standard in academic and research language.

Usage: It frequently appears in compound expressions to indicate method, basis, or perspective. Examples include “tieteellisellä otteella” (in a scientific manner/with a scientific approach) and “tieteellisellä tutkimuksella osoitettiin” (it was demonstrated by a scientific study). The form can precede nouns in the adessive: “tieteellisellä datalla,” “tieteellisellä pohjalla,” etc. Note that the corresponding adverb is tieteellisesti (“scientifically”), which is used where an adverbial meaning is needed rather than a noun in the adessive.
