Thermotransfer, or thermal transfer printing, is a method of applying colorants to a substrate by using heat and pressure to transfer material from a carrier medium, such as a ribbon or sheet, onto the target surface. The approach is widely used for labeling, decoration, and identification across textiles, plastics, metals, and paper.

The transfer mechanism depends on the formulation of the colorant and the substrate. In dye-sub transfers, heat induces sublimation of dye compounds that migrate into a treated substrate, typically polyester or similarly receptive surfaces. Resin- or wax-based transfers rely on melting or softening of the colorant so it adheres to the surface. The choice of ribbon and substrate determines durability, color quality, and wash or UV resistance.

Common materials include wax, wax-resin, and pure resin transfer ribbons, paired with substrates such as coated paper, textiles (especially polyester blends), ceramics, plastics, and metal surfaces. The process usually involves printing the image onto the transfer medium with a thermal printer, then applying heat and pressure using a heat press or portable hot-stamping device to complete the transfer.

Applications span apparel decoration, product labeling, identifiers, signage, and branding components. Advantages of thermotransfer include strong color density, durability under washing or handling, and the ability to produce customized, variable data efficiently. Limitations can include substrate compatibility requirements, the need for specialized equipment, potential cost of ribbons, and the necessity for precise temperature and pressure control to achieve consistent results.
