Thakurgaon

Thakurgaon is a district of Rangpur Division in northern Bangladesh. The district capital is Thakurgaon town. It lies in the fertile alluvial plains formed by the region’s river systems, and the district is administratively subdivided into upazilas and municipalities, with local government centered in the district town.

The economy is predominantly agricultural. Major crops include rice, maize and sugarcane, with fruit orchards and vegetables grown in parts of the district. Livestock and dairy production are important supplementary activities. Small-scale industries and markets support rural livelihoods.

Bengali is the predominant language, and Islam is the principal religion, with Hindu and other minority communities represented in the population.

The area is connected by road networks linking Thakurgaon with Rangpur, Dinajpur and other parts of northern Bangladesh. Rail and air access are available via neighboring districts, while the district relies mainly on road transport for intra-regional travel.

Education infrastructure includes government and private schools and colleges, with ongoing efforts to improve literacy and access to secondary and higher education. Thakurgaon’s regional role is primarily as an agricultural and administrative center within the Rangpur Division.
