Terpe

Terpe is a chemical compound and a class of organic molecules characterized by a specific structural repeating unit. This basic unit is derived from isoprene, a five-carbon hydrocarbon with the formula C5H8. Terpenes are naturally occurring, and they are the primary constituents of essential oils produced by a variety of plants. Their biosynthesis in plants involves the mevalonate pathway or the 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway.

The classification of terpenes is based on the number of isoprene units they contain. Monoterpenes, for instance, are composed of two isoprene units, while sesquiterpenes are made of three. Diterpenes consist of four isoprene units, and triterpenes have six. Polyterpenes, such as natural rubber, are very large molecules formed from many isoprene units. These compounds are responsible for the distinctive aromas and flavors of many plants, contributing to the scent of pine trees, citrus fruits, and flowers. Beyond their sensory properties, terpenes play significant roles in plant biology, including defense against herbivores and pathogens, and attracting pollinators. They also have a wide range of applications in industries such as perfumery, flavorings, pharmaceuticals, and biofuels.
