Televerken

Televerket was the former state-owned telecommunications operator in Sweden. Established in 1853 as Telegrafverket, its primary role was to build and maintain the country's telegraph network. Over time, its responsibilities expanded to include telephony, radio, and later, television broadcasting infrastructure.

The company played a crucial role in modernizing Sweden's communication systems throughout the 20th century. It was instrumental in expanding telephone access across the nation and was at the forefront of technological advancements in telecommunications. In 1953, its name was changed to Televerket to reflect its broader scope beyond just telegraphy.

In the 1990s, as part of a wider deregulation of the telecommunications sector in Sweden and Europe, Televerket underwent significant transformation. It was restructured and eventually privatized. In 1993, it was reorganized into Telia AB, a limited company. Subsequently, Telia merged with the Norwegian telecommunications company Telenor in 2000, forming TeliaSonera, which later rebranded as Telia Company. The legacy of Televerket is thus continued through its successor, Telia Company, which remains a major telecommunications provider in Sweden and the Nordic region.
