There are several primary modes of transmission. Direct transmission occurs through physical contact between an infected person and a susceptible person, such as touching, kissing, or sexual intercourse. Droplet transmission involves the spread of larger respiratory droplets through coughing, sneezing, or talking, typically over short distances. Airborne transmission, on the other hand, occurs when smaller infectious particles remain suspended in the air for longer periods and can be inhaled by others, even at greater distances.

Indirect transmission involves an intermediary. This can be through a vehicle, such as contaminated water, food, or blood, which carries the infectious agent to a new host. Fomites, which are contaminated inanimate objects like doorknobs or toys, can also serve as vehicles for indirect transmission. Another significant indirect route is through vectors, which are living organisms, often insects like mosquitoes or ticks, that transmit pathogens from one host to another.

Vector-borne diseases are a major global health concern, with examples including malaria transmitted by mosquitoes and Lyme disease by ticks. Similarly, foodborne and waterborne illnesses can cause widespread outbreaks. Recognizing and interrupting these transmission routes through measures like hygiene, vaccination, vector control, and safe food and water practices are fundamental to public health.
