Tankcontainer

A tankcontainer, or ISO tank container, is an intermodal container optimized for bulk liquids, chemicals and gases. It combines a rigid outer steel frame with a built-in pressure-rated tank, usually stainless steel or carbon steel, designed to withstand intermodal handling and service conditions. The frame allows the unit to be handled like a standard 20- or 40-foot container and to be transported by truck, rail, and ship without unloading the cargo.

Construction and features: The inner tank is typically lined and may be insulated or jacketed. Standard capacities around 20,000–26,000 liters. External dimensions align with ISO container sizes; common variants include 20-foot and 40-foot lengths. Tanks may include manholes, loading and discharge connections, vapor recovery, pressure or vacuum relief devices, and level indicators.

Materials and compliance: Inner tanks are made of stainless steel for food-grade or chemical compatibility, or carbon steel for many chemicals. The units are designed to meet international intermodal standards and hazard cargo regulations; many are UN-approved for dangerous goods and carry the corresponding markings and testing records.

Uses and operations: Tankcontainers are used to transport chemicals, solvents, edible oils, wines and other liquids. They support direct intermodal transfer between ships, trucks, and trains, and can be cleaned to required standards between cargoes to suit different products.

Advantages and limitations: They enable efficient, safe bulk-liquid transport with mode interchange and reduced unloading. Limitations include restriction to liquids or slurries, the need for compatible temperature control where required, and adherence to regulatory requirements for hazardous goods.
