Süüdistatavad

Süüdistatavad refers to the accused individuals in a criminal proceeding. This term is used in legal contexts, particularly in Estonian jurisprudence, to denote a person or persons against whom criminal charges have been formally brought by the prosecution. The status of süüdistatavad is established at a specific stage of the criminal process, typically after the preliminary investigation has concluded and the prosecutor has decided to pursue legal action.

In essence, süüdistatavad are individuals who are suspected of having committed a crime and for whom there is sufficient evidence to warrant a trial. They are afforded certain legal rights and protections under the law, including the right to a fair trial, the right to legal representation, and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. The legal proceedings aim to determine whether the süüdistatavad are indeed guilty of the alleged offenses.

The term is distinct from "kahtlustatav" (suspect), which refers to someone who is under suspicion but against whom formal charges have not yet been filed. Once charges are formally laid, the individual transitions to the status of süüdistatav.
