Südsumer refers to the southern region of ancient Sumer, located in Mesopotamia. This area, corresponding roughly to modern-day southern Iraq, was a cradle of civilization, flourishing particularly during the 3rd millennium BCE. It is characterized by its fertile alluvial plains, irrigated by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which supported a highly productive agricultural economy.
The civilization of Südsumer is renowned for its numerous city-states, including Ur, Uruk, Lagash, and Eridu.
Perhaps the most significant contribution of Südsumer to human history is the invention of writing, specifically
