Szóalkotások, a Hungarian term, refers to the process of word formation in linguistics. It encompasses the various methods by which new words are created within a language. These methods are crucial for a language's ability to adapt and express new concepts, objects, and ideas.

One common method is derivation, which involves adding prefixes or suffixes to existing base words. For instance, the Hungarian prefix "meg-" can be added to verbs to indicate completion, as in "megír" (to write down). Suffixes also play a significant role, modifying the meaning or grammatical function of a word. Another important mechanism is compounding, where two or more words are combined to form a new one, such as "napfény" (sunlight), a combination of "nap" (sun) and "fény" (light).

Conversion, though less prevalent in Hungarian compared to some other languages, involves changing a word's part of speech without altering its form. Blending, where parts of two words are merged, is also a form of szóalkotás. Finally, onomatopoeia, the formation of words that imitate sounds, contributes to the richness of vocabulary.
