In computer science, string comparison is a fundamental operation used in various applications, including searching, sorting, data validation, and pattern matching.

There are several common methods for comparing strings. Exact comparison checks if two strings are identical character by character. Lexicographical comparison, also known as alphabetical or dictionary order, determines which string comes first based on the Unicode values of their characters. This is similar to how words are ordered in a dictionary.

Beyond exact and lexicographical comparisons, more advanced techniques exist. For example, edit distance algorithms, such as the Levenshtein distance, quantify the minimum number of single-character edits (insertions, deletions, or substitutions) required to change one string into another. This is useful for tasks like spell checking or finding similar, but not identical, strings. Other methods might consider case sensitivity, ignoring whitespace, or matching based on specific patterns using regular expressions.
