Szemhéja

Szemhéja is a Hungarian term that translates to "eyelid" in English. The eyelids are protective folds of skin and muscle that cover and moisten the eye. They play a crucial role in ocular health, shielding the eyeball from foreign particles like dust and debris, as well as from excessive light. Blinking, a rapid and involuntary closing and opening of the eyelids, is essential for distributing tears across the surface of the eye, which keeps it lubricated and clean.

There are two eyelids for each eye: the upper eyelid and the lower eyelid. These structures contain glands that produce meibum, an oily substance that prevents rapid evaporation of tears. Muscles within the eyelids allow for voluntary movement, such as winking or closing the eyes, as well as involuntary actions like blinking and responding to sudden bright lights. Conditions affecting the eyelids can range from minor irritations like styes and chalazia to more serious issues such as blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid margins) and ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelid). The health and function of the eyelids are vital for clear vision and overall eye comfort.
