Syvashs

The Syvash, sometimes transliterated Sivash, is a sprawling system of shallow, brackish to hypersaline lagoons and salt flats along the northwestern coast of the Crimean Peninsula. It forms a natural barrier between the Crimean mainland and the Sea of Azov. The network includes notable divisions such as Bolshoy Sivash (Great Sivash) and Maly Sivash (Little Sivash).

Geography and hydrology: The lagoons are very shallow, often only a few decimeters deep, and their salinity varies with evaporation and freshwater inputs. Water exchange with the Sea of Azov occurs through narrow channels, and many parts are intermittently connected. The surrounding landscape is largely flat steppe, with extensive salt pans that have been exploited for centuries.

Ecology and economy: The Syvash supports distinctive saline ecosystems, including halophytic vegetation and brine-fauna, and serves as a habitat for migratory birds. The area has long been used for salt production, with multiple salt works along its shores; some modern operations continue alongside conservation measures. Surrounding communities rely on a mix of salt production, fishing, and tourism, while the wetlands are valued for their ecological role.

In environmental terms it is recognized as a wetland of ecological significance, with various portions designated for protection under national and regional frameworks.
