Symmetrieänderungen, also known as symmetry breaking, refers to a phenomenon where a physical system that possesses a symmetry in its fundamental laws or its ground state loses that symmetry in a particular realization or phase. This means that while the underlying rules remain symmetric, the observed state or behavior of the system does not exhibit the full symmetry.

There are two main categories of symmetry breaking. Explicit symmetry breaking occurs when the symmetry is not present in the fundamental laws themselves. In contrast, spontaneous symmetry breaking happens when the laws of physics possess a symmetry, but the lowest energy state (ground state) of the system does not. In such cases, the system randomly chooses one of the many possible ground states, each lacking the full symmetry of the laws.

Symmetry breaking is a crucial concept in various fields of physics. In particle physics, it explains the masses of elementary particles, particularly through the Higgs mechanism. In condensed matter physics, it is observed in phase transitions, such as the transition from a disordered paramagnetic state to an ordered ferromagnetic state, or the formation of ordered structures in crystals. The direction of magnetization in a ferromagnet, for instance, breaks the rotational symmetry of the underlying magnetic interactions. Understanding symmetry changes is key to comprehending the diversity of physical phenomena and the emergence of complex structures from simple underlying principles.
