Sydänleikkaus refers to surgical procedures performed on the heart. These operations are necessary to treat a variety of heart conditions, including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, congenital heart defects, and arrhythmias. There are several types of heart surgeries. Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is common for blocked arteries, where a healthy blood vessel is used to bypass the blockage. Heart surgery typically involves opening the chest to access the heart, though minimally invasive techniques are increasingly used. These may involve smaller incisions and specialized instruments. Many heart surgeries require cardiopulmonary bypass, where a machine temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs. After surgery, patients undergo a recovery period, which can involve intensive care followed by a hospital stay and a longer rehabilitation phase at home. Advances in surgical techniques and post-operative care have significantly improved outcomes for patients undergoing heart surgery.
