Surroundäänikanavat, also known as surround sound channels, refer to the discrete audio channels used in surround sound systems to create an immersive audio experience. Unlike traditional stereo sound which utilizes two channels (left and right), surround sound systems employ multiple speakers strategically placed around the listener. These channels deliver distinct audio signals to each speaker, allowing for the reproduction of sound from various directions, including front, side, and rear.

The number and configuration of surround sound channels vary depending on the specific surround sound format. Common formats include 5.1, 7.1, and more advanced object-based audio systems like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. In a 5.1 system, for instance, there are six channels: a center channel for dialogue, front left and right channels for main audio, surround left and right channels for ambient sounds and effects, and a Low-Frequency Effects (LFE) channel for deep bass. A 7.1 system adds two more rear surround channels for enhanced directional cues.
