Suoritusjärjestyksistä, known in English as order of operations, is a set of rules used in mathematics to define the order in which operations are performed in an expression. This standardization ensures that everyone arrives at the same correct answer when evaluating an arithmetic expression. The most common mnemonic for remembering the order of operations is PEMDAS or BODMAS.

PEMDAS stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right). BODMAS stands for Brackets, Orders (powers and square roots, etc.), Division and Multiplication (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right). Both mnemonics represent the same hierarchy of operations.

First, operations within parentheses or brackets are performed. Next, exponents or orders are evaluated. Following this, multiplication and division are carried out in the order they appear from left to right. Finally, addition and subtraction are performed from left to right.

For example, in the expression 5 + 2 * 3, multiplication is performed before addition, so the result is 5 + 6 = 11. If the expression were (5 + 2) * 3, the parentheses would dictate that addition is performed first, resulting in 7 * 3 = 21.
