Suojausreleitä, known in English as protective relays, are crucial components in electrical power systems designed to detect abnormal conditions and initiate protective actions. Their primary function is to safeguard electrical equipment and personnel from damage caused by faults such as short circuits, overloads, and ground faults. When a fault occurs, a protective relay senses the deviation from normal operating parameters and sends a trip signal to a circuit breaker. The circuit breaker then opens the circuit, isolating the faulty section and preventing further damage.

There are various types of protective relays, each designed to detect specific fault conditions. Overcurrent relays protect against excessive current flow, which can overheat conductors and damage equipment. Ground fault relays detect current flowing to ground, indicating a potential safety hazard. Distance relays measure the impedance to a fault, which is inversely proportional to the fault current, and are used for transmission line protection. Differential relays compare currents entering and leaving a protected zone, quickly detecting internal faults.

Modern protective relays are often digital, incorporating microprocessors that allow for sophisticated algorithms and flexible settings. These digital relays offer advantages such as enhanced accuracy, faster response times, and the ability to record fault data for analysis.
