Sundargarh

Sundargarh is a district in the Indian state of Odisha. The administrative headquarters is the town of Sundargarh. Located in the western part of the state, the district is characterized by a mix of forested hills, plateaus and plains, and it is known for its mineral resources. It shares borders with other districts in Odisha and, in parts of the western area, with neighboring states.

The district has a diverse population with a substantial share of Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes. Major tribal communities include Munda, Oraon, and Santhal, among others. Odia is the predominant language, with local dialects and tribal languages spoken in rural areas.

Economy and education: Sundargarh is an important center for mining and industry in Odisha. The city of Rourkela, within the district, is an industrial hub and hosts the Rourkela Steel Plant along with other manufacturing units. Agriculture remains significant in rural areas. The district is also home to prominent educational institutions, including the National Institute of Technology Rourkela.

Culture and administration: Sundargarh has a rich tribal cultural heritage, with traditional music, dance and crafts reflecting the region’s diversity. Administratively, the district is divided into several blocks and tehsils, and is governed by a district collector and a superintendent of police. The district plays a major role in the economy and development of western Odisha.
