Sugárzásvédelme refers to the protection against ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation has enough energy to remove electrons from atoms and molecules, which can damage living cells and cause health problems such as cancer. Sources of ionizing radiation include natural sources like cosmic rays and radon gas, as well as artificial sources like X-rays, CT scanners, and nuclear power plants.

Effective sugárzásvédelme relies on three fundamental principles: time, distance, and shielding. Minimizing the time spent near a radiation source reduces the total radiation dose received. Increasing the distance from the source significantly decreases the radiation intensity, as radiation levels fall off rapidly with distance. Shielding involves placing materials between the radiation source and the person or object to be protected. The type and thickness of the shielding material depend on the type and energy of the radiation. For example, lead is effective against X-rays and gamma rays, while concrete is used for shielding nuclear reactors.

In medical settings, where radiation is used for diagnosis and treatment, strict protocols are in place to ensure patient and staff safety. This includes using the lowest possible radiation doses for diagnostic imaging and employing specialized shielding and remote handling techniques for radiotherapy. For workers in industries that use radioactive materials, personal protective equipment and regular monitoring of radiation exposure are mandatory. Public awareness and preparedness are also crucial for managing potential radiation emergencies.
