Substrat Hinderung, often translated as substrate hindrance or steric hindrance in English, is a concept primarily used in chemistry, particularly in organic chemistry, to describe the influence of the spatial arrangement of atoms or groups of atoms on the reactivity or properties of a molecule. It refers to the physical obstruction presented by bulky groups that can impede the approach of a reagent to a reactive site, or influence the stereochemical outcome of a reaction.

This phenomenon is a manifestation of van der Waals forces. When large groups are in close proximity, their electron clouds repel each other, creating a repulsive interaction. This repulsion can increase the activation energy of a reaction, slowing it down or even preventing it from occurring altogether. Conversely, in some cases, steric hindrance can be beneficial by directing a reaction to occur at a less hindered site, leading to specific product formation.

Substrat Hinderung plays a crucial role in determining reaction rates and selectivities. For example, in nucleophilic substitution reactions, a bulky leaving group or a bulky nucleophile can significantly reduce the reaction rate. Similarly, in addition reactions, steric bulk around a double or triple bond can influence the ease with which a reagent can add to it. The concept is also important in understanding the stability of molecules and the conformation of complex organic structures. Understanding and predicting steric effects is a fundamental aspect of chemical synthesis and molecular design.
