Subparagraphs are typically numbered or lettered, for example 1.1, 1.2, or 4(a), 4(b). Some systems use parentheses around letters such as (a), (b), or extend to deeper levels like 1.1(a). The main purpose is to organize content without creating excessive paragraphs, allowing clear allocation of obligations, conditions, exceptions, or standards.

Usage and conventions: In many jurisdictions, subparagraphs are referenced in cross-references as “subparagraph (1).” The exact notation depends on the applicable style guide or statute. In drafting practice, a single paragraph containing several points may be split into subparagraphs to improve readability and enforceability.

Examples: Paragraph 5 may read: “The tenant shall pay rent on the due date.” Subparagraph 5.1 may state: “If payment is late, interest shall accrue at the rate specified in Schedule A.”
