Subaspects

Subaspects are subordinate components of a broader attribute, or aspect, used in analytical frameworks to decompose complex phenomena into more manageable parts. Each subaspect represents a distinct facet that contributes to the overall meaning or evaluation of the main aspect.

In practice, subaspects are organized hierarchically and can be nested. The selection and depth of subaspects depend on context, purpose, and the level of detail required for analysis. They are typically defined to be complementary, covering different dimensions of a single attribute, but they may also exhibit overlap or interaction among themselves.

Subaspects are commonly employed in fields such as ontology engineering, requirements analysis, and qualitative research to structure information and support assessment, comparison, and decision-making. They enable clearer communication of what is being measured or evaluated and help identify trade-offs among competing facets.

Examples include: in a product quality framework, the aspect of reliability might have subaspects such as mean time between failures, recoverability, and durability; in sustainability assessments, the overall goal may be divided into environmental impact, economic viability, and social equity; in user experience design, usability can be broken into learnability, efficiency, and error tolerance.

Limitations include potential overspecification, redundancy among subaspects, and subjectivity in choosing which facets to include. Critics caution that poorly defined subaspects can fragment analysis or misrepresent the relationships among facets.
