Stämbandsfunktion refers to the physiological processes involved in producing voice. It encompasses the intricate coordination of the respiratory system, the larynx, and the vocal tract. The diaphragm and abdominal muscles provide the airflow from the lungs, which is essential for vibration. This air pressure then causes the vocal folds, located within the larynx, to vibrate. The frequency of this vibration determines the pitch of the voice, while the amplitude influences loudness. Muscles within the larynx adjust the tension and length of the vocal folds to alter pitch and quality. Finally, the vocal tract, including the pharynx, oral cavity, and nasal cavity, acts as a resonator and articulator. Its shape and size can be modified by the tongue, jaw, and lips to shape the raw sound produced by the vocal folds into distinct speech sounds and to add resonance and timbre to the voice. Healthy stämbandsfunktion requires proper breathing, efficient vocal fold closure, and adequate resonance. Dysfunctions can arise from various factors including misuse, overuse, illness, or structural changes in the larynx.
