Stoikiometrísk is a term derived from the Greek words "stoicheion" meaning element, and "metron" meaning measure. It refers to the quantitative relationships between reactants and products in a chemical reaction. These relationships are expressed through stoichiometric coefficients, which are the numbers placed in front of chemical formulas in a balanced chemical equation. The coefficients indicate the relative number of molecules or atoms involved in the reaction.

For example, in the balanced equation for the combustion of methane (CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O), the stoichiometric coefficients show that one molecule of methane reacts with two molecules of oxygen to produce one molecule of carbon dioxide and two molecules of water.

Stoichiometry is crucial in chemistry for predicting the amounts of reactants needed and products formed in a reaction. It allows chemists to calculate the theoretical yield of a product, which is the maximum amount of product that can be obtained from a given amount of reactant.
