Staphylococcus aureus is a common bacterium that can be found on the skin and in the noses of healthy people. It is a spherical, Gram-positive bacterium that is often seen in clusters, resembling bunches of grapes, which is where its name comes from (staphyle meaning grape, and kokkos meaning berry). While it can be harmless, S. aureus can also cause a variety of infections, ranging from minor skin irritations like boils and impetigo to more serious conditions such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections.
